Flareup
U.S. Democrats legalized the export of American fossil gas overseas in 2017, beginning a massive industrial buildout of export terminals, along Cancer Alley in the Southeast but increasingly up the East Coast as well. The export of American gas increases energy prices for Americans, increases pollution in poor communities, and profits flow to only a few corporations. New research reveals the carbon impact of exporting gas is worse than burning coal, but the gas buildout is sold as a “climate solution” for our allies.
While studying abroad in Berlin in fall 2025, I researched the results of the Ukraine war on European energy supplies and began unraveling this story. I created an interactive projection show, displayed for the Fingerfertigkeiten opening in the St. Agnes gallery in Berlin in December 2023. Thank you to Arthur Pohlit for the show photography.
